I’m of the camp that says let Shakespeare plays be Shakespeare plays, including old school approaches - like male actors playing women.
I’ve seen such a production — and it definitely does not work in the modern society.
There was also a Goodman Theater production of 12th Night that had women playing all the male roles and men all the female roles — we left at intermission. There was only one scene that really worked — the rest of the play was dreadful. But, then again, Goodman routinely butchered Shakespeare plays back in the day (20+ years ago).
