MAN SHOT, ARRESTED: A 35-year-old Battle Creek man was treated at Bronson Battle Creek after Battle Creek police said he shot himself in the leg with a gun he purchased as protection because of the coronavirus outbreak. Officers were called to the hospital at 1:10 a.m. Monday when the man arrived by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to his right thigh. He told police he had argued with a man near a gas station at Capital Avenue and Goguac Street and the other man shot him. He said he went home and his wife drove him to the hospital. However when police went to the man’s home on Goguac Street to investigate, they found blood and a shell casing near the living room couch. When police questioned the man again, he first said he had been shot by someone else but then admitted he accidentally shot himself. Police found a 9mm handgun in the man’s dresser. He was arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and reckless discharge of a weapon. No one else was injured. The man’s wife said he just recently purchased the gun because he thought he might need it if there is chaos because of the coronavirus.
