Good lord. What the HELL is going on here? I’ll transcribe Senator Byrd (D-WV) starting at 1:01, for the benefit of others who, like me, hadn’t heard this:

My old mom told me ‘Robert, you can’t go to heaven if you hate anybody.’ We practice that. There are white n*ggers. I’ve seen a lot of white n*ggers in my time, [if you] want to use that word. But, we’ve all… we’ve all… we just need to work together to make our country better.

Fox also presented an apology that was subsequently issued by Byrd’s office, which begins as follows:

I apologize for the characterization that I used on this program. The phrase dates back to my boyhood and has no place in today’s society.
