I am asking about evolution of the consciousness of an individual species, not a larger concept of consciousness in general…
e. g. this or that bird species which developed a bill suitable for eating a particular seed… can the gradual change be explained solely by outside forces causing gradual/sudden mutation into new form, or is the new form driven by changed understanding within the precursor individuals?
