Alton Brown did a episode of Good Eats on pickled stuff like sauerkraut; he posited that most Americans hate sauerkraut because they get it from a can and that homemade sauerkraut (or even commercially packed sauerkraut in jars) usually tastes much better.

I can’t tolerate sauerkraut by itself under any circumstances, but I find it surprisingly delicious when it’s added in moderation onto a giant artery-clogging bratwurst and disguised as a “hot dog”.
