But it’s not just Trump. You read about people who have called the cops on Hispanics because “they look illegal.” Hispanic immigrants are conflated with being illegal. And white immigrants are conflated with being legal or even ignored that they’re immigrants. The aforementoned Sullivan is from the UK. The nation’s biggest pusher via FNC of xenophobic garbage is an Australian. National Review employed John Derbyshire who was in fact undocumented for years while he pushed bigoted crap against PoC and immigrants. Gorka is an immigrant too. There’s definitely a lot of racism that goes with nativism and it’s foolish to ignore that IMO.

And it’s not new. William F. Buckley’s racism was on clear display in his debate at Oxford, and his support of apartheid.

While there are certainly racists on the left, they normally don’t get power. Racism is a feature of conservatism and always has been. Conservatives are still butthurt over their racist war they lost 150 years ago.

For today’s racist conservatives claiming the Southern Strategy never happened, the rejoinder is to ask which party fights to keep the Confederate Battle Flag flying and monuments to traitors up.
