I had an uncle named George, but we always called him “Blackie.” I never, ever though about his name until I was in my 20s, and realized how f’d up it was that 1) he accepted a nickname like that and introduced himself by that name, and 2) the fact that it had never occurred to me before.

He was born on a reservation in OK and that name was given to him as a teenager. It was easier to accept it than fight it.
