Tomorrow or Saturday, the US will overtake Italy as the nation with the most confirmed deaths. Italy’s first death was on Feb 20, and the US had its first on March 3, almost 2 weeks later. Even at its peak, Italy never had as many people die in a single day as the US has right now.

The difference is crystal clear. One nation was taken by surprise and took aggressive measures as quickly as it could. One nation chose to pretend that it wasn’t happening, even with warning, and continues to fumble with its response.

You fail to understand that many Republicans (even some who are not in the Trump cult) agree with Dan Patrick, the lieutenant-Governor of Texas: the economy is paramount and they don’t care how many deaths would be required to open it now. They are concerned about the stock market over everything — and 60,000 deaths are a small price to pay. Actually, they probably wouldn’t care if there were a million deaths, as long as it’s someone else dying.
