This disease is not so lethal that it couldn’t continue to circulate among humans indefinitely. Also, the disease has other hosts and does not rely solely on us for its survival.
Plus, even an extremely lethal disease can still be transmitted. It’s not how lethal the disease is, but how fast you can transmit it.
Smallpox was and tuberculosis is extremely lethal. They’ve both been with us for thousands of years, because people reproduce faster than the diseases kill.
