I did some searching, and with the Li-Ion batteries, leaving it charged for a long time initially is useful for the device containing the battery. Because these batteries are designed to keep a steady voltage, the detector needs to read the power off of the battery to be able to figure out how long it actually has. This is the “calibration” that the initial long charge is trying to provide. See the comments in the first answer in this: android.stackexchange.com.
