This is my Congressional district. It is pretty huge & oddly shaped due to redistricting. But it’s also quite diverse. (It covers everything from Yuppie filled Park Slope, West Indian property owners in Flatbush & Canarsie, Orthodox Jews in Midwood, and OWS activists in Ditmas Park & hipsters/ black professionals who bought brownstones in Bed Stuy.)

Anyway, from what I’ve been seeing on the ground here, Jeffries is doing really well so far & Barron doesn’t have a chance in hell of prevailing. Jeffries raised quite a bit of money, so he’s been able to cover the neighborhood w/ signage. He has the backing of SEIU/1199 which does really great getting out the vote operations in this part of Brooklyn.

I don’t know why Towns endorsed Barron, but I don’t think it will really matter much. Towns was barely tolerated here and everyone who watches the local news knows that Barron is as crazy as a mad hatter. A couple members of my family (which is mostly comprised of middle-class African-American professionals) met Barron at an Obama rally in 2008 and let’s just say … we were all really creeped out by him. There is literally no way in hell that any of us would vote for him.

Further, I have no doubt that Jeffries will do quite well b/c he’s an Obama-style African-American Dem with a picture perfect family. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a local boy who grew up in East Flatbush, went to Midwood High School, attended SUNY Binghamton as an undergrad & got his JD from NYU. So there’s something for everyone in the district to love. The key will be getting voters to turn out in an off schedule primary on a random Tuesday in late June.
