I can’t believe ‘Fake but Accurate’ isn’t dead and buried.

It smells dead.

I actually understand the point of the line. They’re saying that Bush got away with stuff in the National Guard that the average grunt would have been in serious trouble for, and I think it’s probably true. There’s other evidence of it, for sure. But these docs were supposed to really blow the case open, because they were so specific and confirmed the AWOL allegations.

And they were fakes. No two ways about it. That’s why “fake but accurate” doesn’t cut it. Journalists like Rather have a responsibility to properly check their sources. The story collapses when they don’t, and that’s how it should be. You don’t get to say “fake but accurate” if you don’t do the work up front.
