Cracker’s only offensive so that whites can say “see, I’m offended by something, too.” It’s about as offensive as being told you tan poorly. As someone said above, if you really want to call them something they hate, call them a bigot.

But Cracker was a term used by white people to describe white sharecroppers. It put them on the same level as black sharecroppers (which, in the pantheon of the southern agricultural economy, they were). No black man ever called a white man a Cracker unless he wanted to die. He had to lower his eyes and say “Sir”.

So the irony of the white butthurt over the term is rather delicious, isn’t it?
