It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who believe the ER is free if you don’t have insurance. People who are intelligent and well informed about many things, but have never lived without good insurance and don’t understand that a single ER visit can ruin people financially.

It goes beyond that: a community hospital that has a high rate of ER visits from people who cannot pay is a major drain on local resources and leads to higher rates for the folks who can pay.

The only rule is that an ER cannot turn you away for emergency care. Abolishing ACA will ensure that people who could be easily treated with medication or therapy that might cost in the hundreds will ignore those conditions until they require an emergency that costs in the thousands, and those costs will be passed on to the public.
