What conservatives and libertarians don’t dare admit is this. We are the government and the government is us. That soldier you salute, yep he’s the government. That cop whose live you say matters. Yep, he’s the government. That firefighter, yep government. That teacher or professor who helped you in school, very likely yes.

And the voter who casts a ballot, he’s the government. The friend who helps you with your groceries, she’s the government.

The government is not some amorphous entity that exists in a mythical “beltway” on the Maryland-Virginia border. The government is everyone, which is the essence of a democratic republic.
