re: #130 lawhawk

At some point all technology advances with motor vehicles gets put out on to public highways for real world testing.

For instance, cruise control, seat belts, crumple zones, airbags (front, passenger, side, etc.), lane divergence warnings (Eyesight on Subarus for instance), adaptive cruise control, lane correction (active steering), self parking, etc.

The thing is that we still have to figure out as a society who is responsible for when things go wrong with the tech: the automaker when the tech fails to prevent an accident, or the human ā€œdriverā€ who was at the ā€œwheelā€. You know that the manufacturers are going to want it to be on the owner of the vehicle, because that opens up huge liability over time to the manufacturer.

All of which was extensively tested before being put on the public roads.

I have a high school education and I could devise a test for someone darting out in front of a car. How come all the libertarian genius sexual harassers at Uber couldnā€™t? I could also imagine that would need to be a thing to be tested. How come they couldnā€™t?

Liability will probably be settled in a lawsuit. She was hit with an experimental vehicle, the on-board driver of which failed to halt the car.

From a legal standpoint it will be an interesting case. From the victimā€™s standpoint, sheā€™s still dead.
