I did 23andme and found out, to my great surprise, that I’m 99.4 percent European (63 percent English/Scottish/Irish and 36 percent French/German). This does not mesh with the family legendarium. I wondered if 23andme could have gotten it wrong, but of the two closest genetic relatives, one has my dad’s last name and the other, my mother’s maiden name (which is very unusual). So for the time being I’m assuming it’s right, within the limitations of the science.

I need to do 23 and Me. I did Ancestry since I wanted to contact relatives more than anything. Got a ton that match up with my Mom and I but it’s tough to find the exact common ancestor since in her mother’s socio-ethno group names are re-used a lot.
