They would need support from the US (unlikely because Trump) or the EU. A regional power recognizing them would be nice too, but none have a military that would cause China to pause (both South Korea and Japan have mostly defensive forces and neither are likely to jump into a direct war with the People’s Republic)

The Vietnamese government hates China enough to poke that tiger with a very sharp spear. Don’t know if they would for Taiwan but they have fought the PLA to a standstill in the 80s.
