A lot of the famous people had ambition and that one little thing that allowed them to take advantage of changing technology, and they were in the right place at the right time. You can scale that up to the people you listed, but it also even works for lower down. It’s not a knock against anyone who does it, it’s just that a lot of them had a couple of things be in place at the right moment.

I can’t be the only one who has sat through company VP and C-whatever-O talks about their rise to success, and waiting for the moment when Lady Luck steered them into just the right project, or had the key person above them fortuitously retire, or in general zigged instead of zagged where the success of either option was a coin flip. They were all very hard working, smart, and talented people, but so were many of the others who I knew of whose projects (and careers) got killed through no faults of their own.
