The linked SPLC article does not provide a specific reference. Iirc the SPLC has been accused of leftist partisanship.

Fortunately, the Wayback Machine makes the primary source available. Go here, click on “Dixieland Gazette” in the lefthand column, and you will be taken to a list of articles including two by McCain. The quoted passage is in “A Flyer for Rome,(Georgia), When Old Abe Comes Again”.

There may be more by McCain at the archived site. McCain already took more of my time than he is worth, so I didn’t look.
