Actually, many ancient cultures viewed the pinnacle of military success as never having to actually fight a battle.

I liked the American Indian principle wherein you could claim victory if you snuck into the enemy’s camp, touched your enemy, and got back out without him seeing you.

A genius came up with that idea.
