Spreading ashes is, to me, just a repeat of the goodbye and too painful.

This. Everyone at the veterinary clinic I went to was very kind (they even followed up with a card a few weeks later), but when asked if I wanted her ashes I said, “No. The part that made her Layla is gone now—whatever is left is just a shell.”

His picture on my dresser that I see every night and first thing in the morning when I wake is enough to keep him alive in my heart (that’s still broken but getting better). I hope for all of us who have lost our dear ones recently that the grief is replaced by joyful memories soon.

I have many, many photos of Layla, but I can’t bear to look at them unless I prepare myself beforehand. Even then… *sigh*
