Another fundamental issue that gets lost in the battle between evil Republicans and compromising Democrats is that the insurance model is a poor fit to the realities of health care.

Insurance premiums can be reasonable even for expensive items if the risk is generally low (e.g., fire insurance on a house).

But health care isn’t like that. Fairly predictably, people’s health care costs go up as they get older. Also, people with serious health conditions often have very high and ongoing expenses.

50 year old houses are not much more likely to burn down than 20 year old houses, and there is no such thing as a house that legitimately burns to the ground every year.

So why the hell are we talking about health insurance? The entire idea is basically idiotic.
