I get that the death penalty has backfired. The vast majority of the time I’d offer clemency if I were a governor. But anyone convicted of performing torture would never ever get that mercy from me. Those advocating it can not have a position of responsibility based solely on a tragic lack of judgement or humanity.

All I know is this. When we saw images of what the Japanese military had done to our guys in WWII, we were rightfully horrified. The “But but they’re terrorists” doesn’t work for me at all.
