My ex drove a Smart before she totaled it in an accident in a snowstorm, but she was able to walk away from it although the safety cell was bent.

I recall being out once with my daughter and seeing a sign for Trier, some 60 miles away, I thought, heck, that is less than a gallon of gasoline, (or rather diesel, which is cheaper than gasoline in Germany) and so we set off to visit the home town of Karl Marx with its 2,000-year-old Roman ruins.

Well, we’ve chalked up three deer with our Smart now, along with road trips to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Chicago, Sacramento, two to Regina (one of which included a huge trip around Lake Superior and Huron), and the mondo drive to Yukon and the Alaska Panhandle this summer.

The rest of the time we just sit at home. Despite my low income we can take such trips because a) cheap car to drive and b) we don’t spend diddly when we’re home.

The next scheduled trip is during Memorial Day to Chicopee, Mass., followed by a trip through the Maritime Provinces. The mayor of Chicopee sent me an E-mail asking if I would come to the Memorial Day parade and remembrance (since my father was from Chicopee Falls). I agreed to that, so we’re off to Massachusetts in May. (Being off the village board means I don’t have to prepare a bunch of government work in advance of the trip at least, other than water operator stuff.)
