Nixon inherited Vietnam (not that he didn’t have his own fuck ups in that war). It was JFK and LBJ that led us into that disaster.

One of the worst things about Vietnam is that it all seemed to make perfect sense as we were getting into it, given the generally accepted view of the political world at the time. The future of the whole world was going to be determined by the conflict between Communism and Freedom, and the Godless Communists would stop at nothing to win, so we couldn’t let them gain any more ground.

Plus Johnson was lied to by the Pentagon about how well we were doing, and whether we were on the verge of victory.
