If this was shizophrenia, it can come out of nowhere, skip generations, etc. The parents might be pretty normal. Or they could be crazypants.

In either case, you can bet they are extremely freaked out and frightened right now.

If it’s schizophrenia, it’s likely that he didn’t start showing symptoms until he was of age. Not much the parents can do when the child is an adult.
