The states’ rights argument is bs anyway. South Carolina was whining because New York wouldn’t honor the fugitive slave act and return escaped slaves.

The whole idea of the United States was basically to use the scientific method for government. Experiment to find out what works, rather than just theorize. States are the laboratories.

“States Rights”, like any doctrine, can be taken to odious extremes, and it has been. But the underlying idea that states should have some sort of say in local government is a sound one.
