See, this is the problem right there. The debt ceiling increase used to a be formality, a bill that passed without comment and was treated as if it were just part of doing business. Then the GOP decided when a black man took office that suddenly, the debt ceiling was “SERIOUS BUSINESS!!11” and they needed to turn it into an annual drama where they try to use the threat of defaulting on the nation’s debts to extract concessions from the White House.
