I can’t be the only one who has sat through company VP and C-whatever-O talks about their rise to success, and waiting for the moment when Lady Luck steered them into just the right project, or had the key person above them fortuitously retire, or in general zigged instead of zagged where the success of either option was a coin flip. They were all very hard working, smart, and talented people, but so were many of the others who I knew of whose projects (and careers) got killed through no faults of their own.

Here’s a few examples off of my head, including those above:
Elvis - The transistor radio
Michael Jackson and Madonna - The music video
Garth Brooks - Checkout counter tabulation of record sales
Bill Gates - The creation of the PC
Bezos - The ability to sell online
Zuckerberg - Parents and grandparents figuring out the internet
Murdoch - Cable television
