Another question along that line: how did the Soviets handle it in WWII?

Usually all female units assigned to support or non-assault infantry role, such as anti air batteries, crew served support weapons, snipers, etc.

Most of the gender-integrated Russian units were partisans and guerrillas in the early days of the war and not official Russian military.
