Yeah, Johnny Cash. Willie Nelson. Pretty much every musician has written about drugs or alcohol (or both) at one time or another. Beatles. The Who. Zeppelin. They all did. And still do.

Then there’s the misogynistic song lyrics. Pervasive.

And all irrelevant to why Wilson shot and killed Brown.

Completely irrelevant. I find it particularly infuriating because this specific kind of stupid music-based character assassination requires an enormous amount of ignorance to be effective, and yet it seems to be effective.

If Steven Spielberg makes a movie depicting events that occurred during the Holocaust, nobody [who isn’t insane] thinks that the depiction of it equals advocacy of it. People don’t [usually] think Herman Melville really wanted to be called Ishmael in real life. But as soon as someone sets something to music, a lot of people think any expression uttered under musical circumstances is meant to be taken as a literal reflection of the day-to-day desires of the person uttering them.
