But Cracker was a term used by white people to describe white sharecroppers. It put them on the same level as black sharecroppers (which, in the pantheon of the southern agricultural economy, they were). No black man ever called a white man a Cracker unless he wanted to die. He had to lower his eyes and say “Sir”.

So the irony of the white butthurt over the term is rather delicious, isn’t it?

It’s just too bad that poor whites and blacks never worked together much because they really could ahve changed the South for the better. Here’s an interesting chapter from my state’s history that we don’t even learn in school. I learned about this later when I attended a case lecture at UVA about Virginia politics.
