I mentioned my brother the preacher a bit earlier. He is not a fundamentalist and certainly not a creationist. Nevertheless he is part of the problem because he refuses to acknowledge that fundamentalists are a major influence at all. He believes that atheists and others with an “anti-Christian” outlook exaggerate fundy craziness and power to advance their own agendas. He persists in this delusion; claiming for example to have never heard of David Barton until I started ranting about him. To him, this is a lunatic fringe for which the whole religion is vilified. To me, it is increasingly the mainstream of active Christianity, and certainly a powerful voting bloc. There are many Christians who speak out against fundamentalist duplicity and greed, but there could be a lot more. When brutal totalitarians are running wild, silence is complicity.
