Some of my Cornell classmates did not believe me when I told them there were actual shantytowns in the California desert.
“You mean like cardboard shacks. The Grapes of Wrath?”
“Cardboard shacks, Grapes of Wrath, yes”
“No running water or sewer service?”
“No water or sewer.”
“God help us. How is that possible in this day and age?”
This was 35 years ago. Most of the California colonias are gone but they abound in Texas.
