The GOP has been heading down this path for 40 years.

It’s not a secret.

After Nixon played his Southern Strategy, Reagan came along and was helped tremendously by an association of religious right activists/broadcasters, the organization of which still remains. Riding piggy back on this increase of the religious right’s influence was the resurgence of the paleo-right (some religious, some not), with the likes of Pat Buchanan (who was Nixon’s speechwriter) and all his friends (including the Birchers like Ron Paul) coming out more publicly with their beliefs.

The primary nomination process takes lots of bodies, and the activists (of any party) are those legs. So it is hardly surprising that the GOP depends on worker bees from fundamentalist churches to do the groundwork.
