Us poverty-stricken folks are stuck with whatever we’re handed. I can’t move to another country (or even another state) unless I do something like win the lotto.

You might have more options than you think. If you are ever curious, I’d be happy to kick around ideas. Not promoting exit, but I’ve always been in favor of knowing all the options.
