You honestly could not pick worse optics for this trade war than hundreds of farmers facing bankruptcy just before Christmas because they’re sitting on millions of dollars worth of soybeans that likely will rot long before Chinese markets reopen to them.

Like that guy who makes lobster pots in Maine who was interviewed about his business being destroyed by French companies moving in against his business (because the steel for his lobster pots has tariffs but finished goods do not), who voted for Trump because of “illegals” and thinks he is sacrificing for the nation’s good, a bunch of those farmers will have the same attitude.

Moreover, it will be reinforced by the propaganda network of farm-team Websites and the major leagues of FOX. They will be convinced going down with the ship is good for the nation.

Unfortunately, that damages farmers who didn’t vote for this Dumpster fire either, and other businesses related to farming (such as equipment sales).

Don’t think the rich will be hurt though: This fits right in with the idea of disaster capitalism. A whole bunch of farms going on the market for fire sale prices will be snapped up by the wealthy and major agribusinesses. Companies like ADM won’t be hurt by this, nor will wealthy investors.
