All the things people have mentioned, plus the OPEC oil crisis, and the simple fact that 1977 was some kind of cosmic low point for American culture. Paint fell off the new Fords in dealers’ lots. Russia got in Afghanistan. Three-Mile Island melted a bit. And we had disco.
