How can a judge force a lawyer to work without getting paid?

I am not a lawyer, but I’ve read through several tweet threads concerning this issue. As far as I’ve been able to gather, this is not a thing that commonly happens UNLESS a case gets to the point like the Cyber Ninjas garbage, where sanctions and contempt of court are in play. In that case, judges routinely deny lawyers’ motions for withdrawal in order to ensure continuity and to Just Get Stuff Done, preventing the party at issue from being able to delay cooperation with the court’s orders by shuffling lawyers around. The “without pay” part is fairly rare, and appears to be a de facto sanction of the lawyer - “I’m not going to let you withdraw, even if you’re not being paid, because you’re being an asshole and I just want this shit to get done now.”
