re: #100 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

“If you’re 65 years old and you have spent your entire adult life in media, there is precious little room for vicious racism to be attributed to a need for learning and change, and an apology is not a magic incantation that substitutes for responsibility.”

After someone has made a racist comment and later attempts to apologize, I reject the apology because I think that if the individual didn’t think and really believe racist things, s/he would never give voice to them, especially not in a public setting like social media. I look at the apology as a means by which the person tries to save face for him/herself—-it’s self-serving and provides no evidence that s/he has learned anything and won’t repeat the behavior in the future. There is no “get out of jail free card” with me when it comes to one human referring to another as a simian.
