DF annoyed me but he was honest about that at least. He knew his ideology wasn’t the heir of the Revolutionaries but those who sought the status quo. I admit I’m no Edmund Burke scholar but I sort of disagree with him characterized as conservative, I see him more of a moderate. Remember he was not only sympathetic towards our revolution but also the Irish Catholics as well, very rare for a Church of Ireland (Anglican) of that era.

I think there’s always an attempt to paint historical figures with modern brushes. Same thing happens with Hobbes and Locke. It’s important, if you’re going to think deeply about law and politics to understand the basic tenants of their philosophies. But at the end of the day, they were commenting on a very different world than what we live in today and while we can look to them for guidance, it is our responsibility to address modern problems in a modern way
