Sarah Kendzior retweeted an excellent mini-thread about this:
A lot of people seem to think this parallel is not synonymous and they’re wrong for 2 reasons:
1) a distinction between Jews fleeing extinction at the hands of a gov’t & families fleeing extinction due to uncontrollable violence in their countries is arbitrary & meaningless https://t.co/eMPtpFGpVl— Avi Bueno (@AviAhvee) November 25, 2018
A) the majority of people, especially Americans, at the time rejected the Jews’ request for refugee status & safe passage because they claimed, as Trump is now, without evidence, that it’d be impossible to tell who were *real* Jews and who were *pretending* to be Jews to sneak in

B) the foundation for this distinction is nothing less than racism. Those trying to distinguish between the two rely on nothing other than the fact that the Jews fleeing were European and, so, relatable to white people, while Central Americans are brown and depicted as dangerous.
