The apocryphal quote of “let them eat cake” comes to mind. While the general sentiment (in keeping with the revolutionary mindset) has always been that she was showing disdain for the plight of the poor, there’s a growing argument in modern times that Antoinette simply did not understand the situation and thought the poor lacked bread due to shortages rather than being unable to afford such.

I think of that now whenever I hear statements like these from Ivanka, that she’s not a heartless bitch so much as a pampered princess whose worldview is so closed off from reality that she can’t understand when others tell her the truth. Her Daddy tells her something and she accepts it as fact because she has nobody there telling her that he’s lying his ass off.
