A thought on higher fuel prices.
A lot of non-urban folks heat their houses with fuel oil. Tripling the cost of fuel would raise their heating costs thousands of dollars a year. Replacing the heating system would also cost thousands of dollars.
I wonder if rural infrastructure and grid could sustain the electricity demands for all electric heating. And I wonder if a lot of the older housing stock could also manage it without extensive renovation beyond just furnace replacement.
As an aside, my ex’s parents who lived in rural Virginia had a wood fired boiler heating system.
