re: #130 publicityStunted

I read The Handmaid’s Tale years and years ago - it was published in 1984 (how apropos), and is probably even more relevant and fitting today, given the rise of the Religious Right (plus her vision of money being nothing but an electronic record, able to be wiped out or altered in seconds)

As for Year of the Flood, its vision of all-powerful corporations destroying the environment and humanity is also far too close for comfort. The book tour Atwood put together for promoting it, complete with mock church choirs performing “hymns” from the “God’s Gardeners” pro-environment religious cult, was hugely entertaining - I saw it when it came by my town last year, and it’s what got me interested in the book. Atwood’s a very dynamic speaker with a dry, razor-sharp satirical wit.

Now I’m going to have to get Year of the Flood too. I really like Margaret Atwood. Thoroughly her interview with Bill Moyers on religion.
