Oh I wouldn’t even go into alt-history. It was just a thought… I don’t remember as much of their writings as I should, but I’m really surprised there wasn’t more said on how bad it was going to get.

Edit: And, if through time travel magic you could show those men what became of the slavery issue, it’s just as likely they would have said “Fuck it, let’s just have two countries then” and drawn a straight line across the map to make a Slave and Free country right then and there.

The Articles of Confederation were so useless that if I understand correctly, the Constitution was written in what was supposed to be just another review of the articles… Everybody got together and pretty much just wrote something new from scratch without much concern for the old articles. It’s a shame that direct records weren’t kept of the debates.

Stuff that seems so common sense now - unified currency, a standing army, a strong federal government - was all up for fierce and contentious debate at any given time.
