There should be an “equivalent to” sign (like “equals” but with three bars) in the upper left-hand corner. Click that and the sidebar comes out.

What happened is the sidebar changed. It no longer had a list of subscriptions. Instead it looked like a redesign that pushed Youtube Red, and a favorites list by category. It did have a link for “subscriptions” but that took me to a page with all the videos in all my subscriptions (sorted by reverse date.)

Then I reloaded and got the mechanic monkey.

Then I reloaded again and the Youtube layout reverted to what we have been used to the past year, with, as you point out, the Subscriptions listed on the side.
