I had a thought this morning… Trump is obviously questioning Pence’s loyalty these days, and Pence is flexing a bit in speeches, so, hypothetically:
In December 2017, Trump announces that he’s going to pick someone else for VP. Pence says, “fork you, I’m going to run.” What happens? Pence one on one against Trump would be the
whiteright wing evangelicals’ best chance to get one of their own. So do they abandon Trump for a true believer?
That’s a great question. Pence would be their best chance at having one of their own in the Oval Office. TBH I just don’t know Pence credibly distances himself from Trump for both a nomination and then a GE. It’s why if someone runs against Trump in the GOP primary, it will have to be someone who has been a long time critic of his like Kasich. Kasich has credibility whereas Pence does not nor would someone like Haley who also gets talked of as a potential inter-party challenger to Trump in 2020.
