re: #56 mmmirele

I’m not sure exactly what’s been happening, but in the last six months, I’ve worn out about a dozen socks. Now the cheap cotton/wool socks I got last year, I expected that to happen, but the Gold Toe socks I’ve had for some years? Nope. They’ve been wearing out as well.

My brother tells me it’s because I don’t clip my toenails. I pointed out that they’re wearing out on the sole, just going threadbare. And I do clip my toenails. Since I wear socks all the time (due to diabetes), I kind of go crazy if a toe even hangs up on the inside of a sock. And yes, wearing socks all the time may be contributing, but I’ve been wearing socks all the time since about 2009ish. I used to go barefoot, my doctor told me she wanted to see me wearing shoes, even in the house, and I compromised with socks.

I have been listening to a podcast by Peter Attia about foot health, and the trend of cushioned athletic shoes since the 70’s boom. Cushioned shoes let humans increase the length of their gait and use their heel more in the walking/running movement. As opposed the using the forefoot, which is more natural. The solution is working toward more minimalistic shoes so that you move more naturally and the foot muscles strengthen back to their capability.
Maybe you are over-using your heel.
